Review of Safe with Me by Kristen Proby

"Keeping others safe is what Caleb Montgomery does. He’s never had a problem taking on an assignment, whether it was during his dangerous SEAL days or his most recent job of training war mercenaries. But being assigned to keep Brynna Vincent and her adorable daughters, Maddie and Josie, safe from an unknown threat has thrown Caleb off his axis. Hot for the tall brunette since she came back to town more than a year ago, being close to her day in and day out is cracking Caleb’s resolve to keep his hands off her gorgeous body and his head in the mission.

Brynna is sick and tired of being afraid. All she wants is a normal, quiet life for her and her precious girls. Just as she’s settling into her new home in Seattle and feeling safe again, Caleb shows up on her doorstep insisting the danger is as high as ever. But whether she needs to be sheltered from the threat in her past, or from the intense emotions she feels for the sexy, protective man sleeping in her home, remains to be seen. What will happen if Brynna and her girls fall in love with a man so broken he may not be able to protect them from the danger that threatens, much less himself?”

SAFE WITH ME is the fifth book in the With Me In Seattle series, and continues to follow this tight-knit, loving family through life’s trials and tribulations with humor, passion and everlasting love."

In reading the other books in this series we have already met Brynna and her two daughters, Maddie and Josie.  We learn that she is Stacy's cousin and is moving back to town, but we never learn why.  Caleb Montgomery has always been the more stand-offish one of the brothers.  We don't learn much about Caleb in the previous books, other than he is a SEAL and goes on dangerous missions....but no one really talks about them.  I was so glad to read this book because I have been dying to know what was going on with Brynna and Caleb, both individually and together.

Brynna and her girls witness something devastating and are forced to move back home for protection from an unknown threat.  Brynna is stubborn and will not move out of her home and is not really good about following directions for her protection.  Caleb, in a moment of frustration, decides to move in with Brynna and her daughters at their home so that he can better keep an eye on them.
The attraction between Brynna and Caleb is obvious to everyone....and it doesn't hurt that Caleb is a Montgomery, which would make any woman's mouth water!  As they live together, feelings develop and Brynna and the girls fall in love with him.  Caleb realizes he is in love with her and panics.  He panics because he is battling issues of his own and doesn't think he is good enough for them.  When he panics, he does something to Brynna that he can't undo.  Brynna is closed off to Caleb in order to protect herself and Caleb just walks away.  While he is separated from Brynna something terrible happens.  He doesn't know it until he is home for other reasons, but he knows that he failed to protect her and the girls.  He doesn't know if the relationship can be saved, but he vows to try.  He loves Brynna, and those are his girls....he wants his family back.

I am so glad to finally get to know why Brynna came back to town.  I just adore Maddie and Josie.  What I love most about this story is Caleb.  He is a strong, beautiful man, who has a kind, gentle heart.  He has seen things and been a part of things that no one can understand.  He fights internally with those issues and struggles with PTSD.  I feel for him and what he has had to go through. When he walks away from Brynna, I yelled at my kindle.  I was so mad at him for just giving up.  He not only broke Brynna's heart.....but he walked away from two little girls who loved him.  That really pissed me off.  Thank goodness, he realizes his mistake and attempts to make things right.  The epilogue was beautiful.  I loved Maddie and Josie calling Caleb "daddy" and I loved how they had a family wedding ceremony and Caleb said vows to the girls as well as to Brynna.  That was such an amazing moment.  You can just feel the love he has for those two little girls.  This was a beautiful ending for two people who have a lot of ugly in their past.  I feel so much better knowing that Caleb finds happiness despite the ugliness in his past.
